There are different types of electro-plating units that are used in the optical industry. The �touch up� plating pens are most common for repairs. This unit consists of different plastic tubes with felt tips that dispense salt solutions pertaining distinct metals (usually gold, silver, nickel, black nickel and copper). These pens are attached to a base that produces a negative charge and a clip is attached to the eyeglass or sunglass frame to create a contact to attract the metallic salt. This system is designed to treat smaller areas. It is important to note that some metals may be more resistant to plating than others.
The traditional method of electroplating consists of a beaker or container that holds a metallic salt solution. A base unit with stems that creates a negative charged is placed in the container with solution. A clip is then attached to the metal eyeglass or sunglass frame to create a contact that attracts the metallic salt creating a the desired metallic color. This system is used for bigger areas. It is important to note that some metals may be more resistant to plating than others.
